Hair transplantation is the definitive solution to hair loss problems for both men and women. Medical research in this field has made great progress, meaning that any hair transplant procedure is completely safe and the results are very positive. The most recognized techniques available include the follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) methods. Unfortunately there are some circumstances where hair transplants should be avoided, however, there are many other cases in which either FUE and/or FUT can be performed with no problem at all.

Things to consider before going for a hair transplant

Baldness affects nearly 85% of men between ages 20 and 60, for this reason, every year thousands of people decide to have a hair transplant to restore their hair. If you are thinking of giving a definitive solution to your hair loss problem, these are a couple of things you should know before going for a hair transplant.

  • Patient’s state of health. This might sound obvious, but a patient’s health is an important factor that affects the possibility of getting a hair transplant. For example, if the potential candidate is diabetic or has a heart condition, the surgeon must objectively evaluate the risks and decide whether or not to refer the patient for hair transplantation. For cancer patients a hair implant might not be possible right after chemo and radiation treatments have finished. It is recommended to wait 6–12 months to see if hair has naturally grown back, but if it hasn’t and there are no other restrictions, then the patient can be a good candidate for hair transplantation.
  • Hair quality and quantity in the donor area. Another important aspect hair transplant surgeons will take into account is the quality and quantity of hair in the patient’s donor area. Depending on the degree of baldness and if the hair conditions in the donor area are not optimal, the intervention should be discouraged to not disappoint the patient’s expectations. On the other hand, if the potential patient has enough healthy hair reserve, the chances of receiving a hair transplant are greater.
  • Importance of the patient’s age. There is no right age for a hair transplant because every patient is different; however, 30 is perhaps a good age. In some cases it is better to wait longer since the donor area might not be stable and if the patient is very young, it can be difficult to determine if the hair from that area will be permanent. In other words, the best is to wait until the pattern of baldness has set in to get the right hair transplant procedure. For patients under 25, specialists often advise to start with other treatments, like PRP hair loss therapy to postpone undergoing a procedure too early.
  • Cost of hair transplantation. Most health insurance plans consider hair transplants as cosmetic treatments, therefore, these types of procedures are not covered. The costs of getting a high-quality transplant in the US are very expensive. Despite that, if patients look for other options, they will certainly find more affordable treatments in other countries, such as Turkey, India, and Mexico.

It is true patients look for the best bang for their money, yet there is also some truth to the saying “you get what you pay for”. Choosing price over quality can bring serious consequences, such as unskilled surgeons performing hair transplants, long-lasting damage to your scalp, not to mention undesired results.

For that reason, at Hair Center Mexico, we believe that choosing the right surgeon is your most important decision. Our clinic is committed to offering our patients the best hair transplant treatments in Mexico at affordable prices, without compromising quality.
